Does Lincoln Riley ever need to recruit a quarterback again?

The year is 2022, Oklahoma has won the Big 12 (again), they're going into the College Football Playoff (again), and for the first time since 2014, a quarterback they recruited has been the main reason their offense is clicking.

Could all of that actually happen? Well...

A dual threat quarterback that has insane talent and said talent is not being used properly? Originally from the state of Texas? Wants to transfer to a big time program? Tell me where you have heard this story before.

Lincoln Riley and the Oklahoma Sooners for the past four years is where you have heard this story before and it may not be changing any time soon. It has been since 2015 since the regular starting quarterback for Oklahoma actually signed for the Sooners on signing day. Even then, it was Trevor Knight and he got out of there as soon as possible.

King announced he was going to redshirt after Houston's fourth game in the season and everyone immediately thought about Oklahoma. Even when he said he had zero plans on transferring, did you really think he would take a year off to come back to another 6-6 Houston team? Not a chance. But who can blame him? If he goes to Norman, he has a better chance at winning a Heisman trophy than not winning a Heisman trophy.

The most maddening part of all of this is that the No. 1 quarterback from the 2019 recruiting class is sitting on the bench just waiting to play. Spencer Rattler is an insane talent and if Riley takes another transfer quarterback, he will risk losing him.

In today's college football world with the Transfer Portal, players will leave the school they committed to the second a starting job is not given to them. Mix that with the track record Oklahoma is going to have, they may never have to recruit a quarterback for the future ever again. Even if one or two of the players bust, the Big 12 is weak enough to where Oklahoma can win with a mediocre QB1. If Rattler does not start for the Sooners, who knows when they will start one of their own recruits again.
