What a weekend in sports

This weekend is why sports are the greatest thing on earth. This entire weekend, the world was captivated by six, yes, six different sports. This weekend we saw great games and storylines in baseball, basketball, football, golf, hockey, and soccer. Basketball and hockey had their playoffs, baseball regular season is in full swing, spring football gives us a tease of the fall, and title races are heating up over in Europe. To top it all off, the greatest golf tournament in the world, is won by the greatest golfer of all time.
Before getting to the important and sports that actually meant something, lets touch on spring football. Alabama, Miami, Michigan, Nebraska, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and Texas all played their annual spring game. Not much to talk about, just fun to see some sort of college football played in the middle of April.
Now to the real sports of the weekend:
Where to even begin with Tiger winning his fifth green jacket? 11 years since he last won a major and his first Masters victory since 2005, Tiger put on an electric show for the entire world to watch. 70, 68, 67, and a Sunday red 70, Tiger had everyone on the edge of their seat. Going back and forth with Francesco Molinari on the front nine, Molinari double bogeyed twice on 12 and 15, ending his shot at the green jacket. Woods went -1 on the back nine and completed one of the greatest comeback stories in all of sports.
Nobody thought Tiger would be back on this stage. Nobody. If you do not believe me, just check Freezing Cold Takes on Twitter. From the car accident, to the affairs, to the arrest, and to all of the injuries. Tiger was done in the golf world and would never win another major. Boy did he prove us wrong. Watching him tap in his Masters’ sealing bogey on 18 had me, the guy I was sitting next to, and the rest of America in tears. What a story that will never be forgotten.
Baseball is back and finally in full swing. It has been a weird start to the season. The Yankees, Red Sox, and Cubs all have losing records. The rebuilding Seattle Mariners have five losses and are leading the AL West by a game. The biggest and best story line of this weekend is/was Chris Davis and his struggles at the plate. Davis had a 0-54 streak going that FINALLY ended with a 2 RBI single in the first inning on Saturday against the Red Sox. 577 other player had hits in between his cold streak. Breathe easy Chris, it is finally over.
As usual, soccer had an electric weekend. Juventus and Barcelona both dropped points, losing 2-1 to SPAL(without Ronaldo) and drawing Huesca 0-0(without Messi). The Bundesliga title race continues to be within a point between Bayern and Dortmund, both picking up three points.
Despite all of the great games outside of England, the Premier League stole all of the headlines this weekend. It is the most compelling title race in soccer as it has been neck and neck since the new year. City got a routine 3-1 win away at Selhurst Park against Palace. Not much of a surprise. Liverpool however, got a statement and signature win at home against Chelsea. Liverpool fans and even Jurgen Klopp have said this game avenges the famous Gerrard slip that cost Liverpool the title in 2014. City has a busy next nine days with a Champions League and Premier League game against Spurs and a title deciding Manchester Derby against Manchester United. While this weekend was great, get ready for an even better week.
If it was not for Tiger and the Masters this weekend, the NHL Playoffs would have stolen the show. On Saturday alone, there were three overtime games. The Stars/Preds and Avalanche/Flames series both got tied up Saturday night in dramatic overtime fashion. The big storylines have been the big time favorites not only losing, but being down in their series. The Islanders lead 3-0 against the Pittsburgh team that won back to back Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017. Tampa Bay lost at home again Friday night and Game 3 in Columbus. They are now down 3-0 to the Blue Jackets. Like the Lightning, the Jets did not take advantage of their home ice, losing both. They put six past St. Louis to remain in the series.
To round off the Eastern Conference, the Capitals lead comfortably 2-0 against the Hurricanes and the Boston/Toronto series seems to be living up to the hype, being 1-1 after two games in Boston. Vegas took care of business in the Sunday night cap, leading their series 2-1. There is nothing like playoff hockey.
Finally, the pointless NBA Playoffs begun Saturday afternoon. Yes these matchups and series can be fun, but it all seems pointless with the Warriors still in the competition. The East does become more interesting with LeBron not in the conference though. Toronto remained the same Toronto the world knows in love, losing to the Magic 104-101. Even more embarrassingly, not only did the 76ers lose by nine to the Nets, they were booed by their own fans. What else would you expect from Philly though? The Nuggets continued the trend of losing to teams they really shouldn't be losing to, with a 101-96 loss to the Spurs. The Warriors blew out the Clippers but nobody cares and they are already sharpied as the NBA Champions.
Sunday was more calm, with the Celtics winning a low scoring game at home and the Bucks taking care of the Pistons. OKC and Portland seems to be the most exciting first round series and Game One ended with a 104-99 Portland win. James Harden dropped 29 and the Rockets rolled by the Jazz 122-90. Yes, we(I) can complain about how these NBA Playoffs do not mean anything because of the Warriors, but they are still exciting. Give it another week or so, when series go deep and things will really start to heat up.
I cannot remember a weekend that was more fun than this one in sports. Two sports started their playoffs, soccer has multiple domestic title races, America’s past time is in full swing, and for the cherry on top, one of the greatest stories in history transcribed with Tiger winning the Masters. To all those people who do not enjoy sports and think they are stupid, I am sorry that you live a sad sad life.
